Budapest is right on the border between Eastern and Western Europe. Walking on its streets one feels more and more like a citizen of a post-Soviet country and then s/he turns around the corner and before his/her eyes flashed the amazing view of the river and all the Gothic buildings around it.
In Budapest the cubic style of the ex Soviet union and the magnificence of the old Western capitals have arranged meeting around the river. People are calm and steady, there is no rush on the streets. The golden cupolas are shining, the towers are stretching for the sky, sculptures are picking at you from the walls, monuments are looking with irony down on you, the Danube is flowing in its greatness and the tourists are not a news at all.
The streets are wide and filled with art - form the usual graffiti, though paintings on the pavements to galleries everywhere around. The charm of Budapest, though is that it is full of surprises. As you walk on the most ordinary street one can imagine, you turn left and on the next moment the whole Pest (the hill) is shining before you with its churches and the sparkling river below. Walking around and seeing it all makes you wonder how this dual city is not tern apart. In fact, when you think about it is in the contrary - here everything is in perfect balance.
We can not miss the people and the places they meet. In Budapest everyone is extremely calm. But after a beer or two you can see beneath the shining eyes their tempestuous characters. Soon enough everyone laughs and talks, and smiles. People here know that they are in a good place. They feel that this spot, between the Europes, between the ages and among the river is where everything crosses. everyone comes sooner or later; they are in the center of the world.
Another hidden treasure of Budapest are the bars. Here I learned that some of the best bars in Europe are in the city. But this is not the essential. What is important about them is that no matter which one you will choose. they are all created and maintained with love and style - they are colorful and sexy, and crazy. and bio, and commercial, and art, and exactly as controversial, as the city itself. Every small detail is touched, thought of and put in place to create positive emotions and to make you feel at home.
Budapest deserves many days of wandering, discovery and relish. It is a place to explore and get lost, and find yourself again in this crossroad of worlds.
