It’s cold outside, so naturally while I walk on the gloomy streets and I’m trying to keep my fingers warm deep inside my pockets, the other thing I do is think about sunshine. Summertime and living is easy, right? I know it’s a tad too early, but I keep catching myself planning my summer.
I feel like most people have a dream vacation – be it a long road trip with friends, good music and a big thermos of coffee, some time on the beach or a week-long hike. It all sounds good, right? Especially now, in the middle of winter. But me? I’m thinking about something else, something so big and so beautiful.
What I want to do, what I’ve always wanted to do, is to just get a little backpack and my bike. She’s a thing of beauty – a vintage sky-blue Peugeot. I actually even know what I’m taking with me – I need a sleeping bag and a tent, a good wind-protecting jacket and a few t- shirts. I’d like to get on my dreamy blue bike and just go – take the first street to the right, go out of the city and just continue wherever my heart wants me to go. Wandering, and doing it on a bike – isn’t that the dream? Of course, it would be even better with some friends, but I feel like I would also totally do it alone – just take a two weeks leave from work and try and go the other corner of the country. I imagine meeting some people, staying in hotels every now and again, but mostly what I want to do is just keep going and sleep in my tent.
I know it’s not something everyone will do, and of course I’m a bit afraid of it. But hey, as people say, if your dream doesn’t scare you, it’s not big enough, right? I feel like a thousand
stories will be at the end of my fingertips (or, well, the corners of my tires).
Two weeks is all you need and then you remember it forever – you have one of those experiences that will keep you warm on nights like this one, when it’s so cold outside you just want to stay in bed until spring. The blue bike, a little backpack and miles and miles of road – this is my idea of a perfect summer vacation. What’s yours?
