“I’m not very much into plants – she tells me as we pass by a big, beautiful one on the street – but lately they make me feel so good.” She stops and touches it and I start listening closely, because I’m also not a plants person (one time I managed to kill a flower in just two days – two days!). I like the concept of me having a plant at home and taking care of a living thing, but I can’t find motivation to do it, so I watch her and start asking her to tell me more.
She says there is a plant that she touches every time when she goes home – because it has big green leafs and they remind her of freedom, of something wild, big and beautiful, and it feels nice to be in touch with that. “When I run my fingers across the leafs, it just makes me feel good – like I’m present, I’m just there, you know?”. Then she explains how just for a second, touching a plant – or watching one for a while – makes you feel like you escape your life, but not in a bad way – more like you go away from your appointments and things you have to do and you just enjoy this moment. And if you feel like touching it, through that, she says, you feel the roots in the grounds and you get in touch with nature. Which is something we all probably need to do a lot more, as I add after that.
I know it’s a simple story, but it really stirred something in me, and probably exactly because it’s so simple and yet so powerful. So while we walk, we pass by a flower shop. I ask her to wait for me, go inside and buy two plants – one for her, one for me. I’ve heard enough reasons to really try and take care of it, let’s see how it goes – keep your fingers crossed for me.
