3 minutes. That's how long it took for the seismic waves to shake the earth beneath people's feet. In 2010 and a few days ago..
On Wednesday 16 September 2015, Chile didn't go to sleep early. Just before it switched the lights off, tucking its babies comfortably in, it was thrown on its back by a strong shake of the earth beneath its feet.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.3 shook the long narrow strip, home of 18 million people. Chile is no stranger to tremors. People are still recovering from the last earthquake in 2010, which took the lives of 500 people. And for three minutes it brought itself back. All the memories of all things lost in that little episode in time. Just like a flashback.
And while supermarkets can be easily cleaned up from the inflicted damage, people's fears of losing the roof above their heads is something Chile should work out how to ease and facilitate.
Furthermore the whereabouts of Chile are such that earthquakes bring about another natural disaster - tsunamis. The Pacific goes against the nature of its name and instead of pacifying people it wrecked havoc. For many who chose to celebrate the last summer days and the Independence day of Chile on the coasts it turned out to be non-pacifying.
Our prayers go to the families that lost someone and to those who lost their homes to this natural disaster.
