In Greece we have a specific term for homeland, that means not just you country, but really the small piece of land you are from; in addition has the root of the word "father" in it - ιδιαίτερα πατρίδα. It is a proud phrase that we use to underline our origin.
Here it is important where exactly are you from, because our country is divided in many small parts. Being from an island makes you in the same time a Greek and an islander. But the island is in Greece, you say. Yes, but it is in the same time a part from the country and in a way a small country. of its own
Every island has its own history, heroes, specific traditions. products and foods, its own capital. There are even words that are used only on this or that island and hardly can be understood by an outsider. The people from your island, form your homeland, are more like family than neighbors (in reality many are indeed).
There is something very ancient-like in the way we see ourselves. We are in the same time divided and united, convinced that we are unique, but still we admire the others. There is this dualism in our very core that is in the same time in balance with us and our way of life. Or, maybe, our way of life is constructed so that we can be in balance with it.In any case the sense of belonging is a key one for the Greeks. We feel very good by the ability to define ourselves once by nation, once by homeland, and by family name. For us living together and sharing the everyday is also a part from the whole. We do not bear to live alone and feel best close to our roots, our loved once, our land.
