To live on an island is in no case easy. We have problems with the water and the supply, with the electricity and the heating in winter. We have limited access to more far away destinations. We know each and everyone not only in town, but in all towns around.
And it is still great. You have this surrounded by sea, small and stony piece of earth you call home. You arrive with the ferry (because is the only way) and seeing the mountains' line on the horizon makes your heart tremble with joy.
If you need help, anyone would provide it. If you need a friend (or family in that matter), they are everywhere to be found. If you need to be alone, you know all the secret places and all the paths to them.
Although it has its difficulties it is a good life. It is full of love and care, because you can not be on such a small piece of land and not taking care of it, it just not possible. In personal plan makes you really organized (if you miss the ferry, you have no chance in taking that fly or even getting to a working shop) and really tolerant. It makes you realize how the small things can take a big place in people's lives (because everything is small).
You start to appreciate the convenience in stuff more than their prize or size - just imagine a huge car on a small road with many turns. Here the common sickness of "The bigger, the better" and this need to posses the newest and more expensive of all is just not working. Here everything has its place and its time ( a little biblical, maybe). The competition is not on who's making more money, is in who is really better and is a friendly one, of course. After all, you grew up together.
Our home is not our fortress, is our island. And it lives inside us. It makes us see the world differently and understand others. Because everyone is an island in the sea of life.
