Today I had forgotten my headphones I was very sorry for it. The reason wasn't the lack of music (although it would have made my day more pleasant), but a presence. When coming back home today I heard two people talking in the bus. I didn't really want to listen to the conversation, but didn't really have a choice. They were a woman at about 30 and, as I understood later, an 17-year-old student. The boy had understood that the lady was working at a supermarket that is hiring right now and was asking her about his chances to get a job and study at the same time. The woman was very kind and answered all his questions - how to apply, where, with whom to speak. At the end of the conversation the boy asked "And is it a nice job?" and she answered "Well, it is a job like every else. Is not very good, but you go, do what's expected of you and go home"
What struck me at that moment was the thought that we have started to see our jobs, our work, as just something we must do. No thought, no passion, no interest. Just go, do and get back home. As simple as that. And not only the lady said it, she gave it as a kind of advise at an young boy who now starts his career.
I refuse to accept this point of view. I believe that although obviously many people see their work just as annoying obligation that must be done, one shouldn't let his/hers life to look in this way. What we do for a living is not just what the society needs us to contribute, is what we devote a very big part of our time, our minds, our strength, our talent - of ourselves. In the end it is a part of the legacy we leave at the world. One can not easily pass this. You can be a doctor, a dish-washer, an engineer , a singer, a common worker, it doesn't really matter. Whatever we do we need to do it with love and passion, we need to do it right. We all have had jobs we don't like. I believe that one should either look elsewhere, either find the the pleasure in it. A work that is done with no satisfactions gives an empty result. For me it is not right to see your work just as a money source or an annoying obligation. One must love what s/he dedicates his/hers time to or change it. Otherwise we are lying to ourselves and are wasting our time by giving nothing to ourselves, the others and the world.
