Nowadays, in the age of fast-living and stressed everyday life we tend to alienate ourselves from nature. Losing our connection with the environment and replacing it with different objects and commodities that make our life “easier” break that connection even more.
Let’s take Tom for example, an employee in a standard office. Tom has got a week (or if he’s lucky), or two in the year when he can spend away from the grey everyday hustle and bustle of the office. Those two weeks should be enough for him to recuperate from the long draining days in front of the computer. He should reprogram his life and the bad habits that he has formed, like eating pre-cooked meals with a liter of coke in front of the TV or checking his emails first thing in the morning and before sleep.
Tom has surely not imagined ending up like this. He sighs as he throws away the lasagna box and turns his ambient light lamp on, turns on a calming environmental disc that cost him only $9,99 and for the last time checks his mailbox. Not finding anything new there he reluctantly climbs up the bed and puts his sleep mask with lavender on. Tom starts counting sheep …
I know that by now you have formed an idea of Tom which is not that favorable, but Tom has not always been like this. He used to go hitch-hiking, attended festivals with friends and spent weeks in the countryside without internet – bliss. He was a happy man. He came from a small town where he had a secure and content life.
One day he thought that he could do better and that what he had was not enough. So he packed his bags and set out for the big city.
