There is no one way to do that, of course. To truly know yourself, you need time, dedication, and no ordinary amount of bravery – but if you’ve started on that path, and you truly want to know yourself better, you will soon find out how rewarding that experience is.
There is no one way to do that, but Proust believed that a simple game to know yourself is to answer questionnaires – even the most basic ones. The French writer talked often about how by simply taking the time to answer a few questions you can find out deeper truths about yourself. Taking his own advice, he answered a few questions and saved his answers to compare with his latest ones, which he made sure to update every few years (and believed you can genuinely be surprised by yourself – past and present). When he was 14 years old, a friend of his asked him those questions which he wrote down, together with his answers, and continued to come back to them for years. He had all of his entries in a little notebook that sold for 102,000 euro on an auction some years ago – seems like it pays to know yourself (even if he was obviously no longer around).
If you want to take his advice, why not spend some time with the set of questions commonly known as The Proust Questionnaire? Take your time and be sure to write them down so you can compare your answers in a couple of years.
