Tricking your brain to become more focused? Sandra Bond Chapman – founder of the Center for Brain Health, University of Texas – believes you can. Her team created a method called SMART after careful research and then tested in on participants, who become more focused after only 12 hours of using it. It relies on a few studies – most of them not too big, but however they give food for thought, or at least provide valuable advice.
Most of us believe that the more you feed the brain with information, the better it works, but this – partnered together with stress – will often actually impair brain function. So what do you do to become more focused?
While we expect the release of an app later this summer that will help guide us in the SMART method, let’s have a look at its three main points that everyone can integrate in their daily life.
Strategic attention: In other words, focus on what’s important. Stop multitasking – this program teaches us to truly concentrate on what needs to get done. To increase your productivity, stop trying to do two or more things at the same time.
Integration: First try to quickly scan the details of the task in front of you, and after that let your focus become wider and think about the bigger picture at hand. Try to reach a broader perspective, but only after you have focused on the details for a little while.
Mental flexibility: These are focuses our attention to being able to consider various view points on the problem, and try to look at the task in hand from the most surprising point of view you can find. This way, you are improving your brain function by creating new links which in turn means you are better equipped to deal with your task.
