That a person many years ago could think something, formulate those thoughts into written text that somehow when read by us and others, interacts with our own journey and experience such that we are changed.
Is this the case with any recorded and shared media?
For instance would this observation be true for other media or expression of thought beyond books - plays, poems, films, tv programs, music, etc.
If we ranked these in order of potential to impact, what would that look like?
Would reading have the greatest impact because it is a more contemplative activity than a TV program, which takes little effort and not much participation?
On the other hand would a film have a greater impact effect because it is processed through more senses and visually rather than through words?
I don't know myself - I will have to think on this more.

It is strange how a book changes our perspective. When we read a book we enter entirely in its world. But when we put it down we are a little bit changed. We maybe start seeing details we hadn't noticed before. Or start creating a storyline of ours, using the surroundings. Or, for example, look in a different way on the familiar things.
In fact, that is, I believe, the thing about great books - a book can interest you; a great book can change you. As we are a combination of our experience and every single book lives, in a way, its own separate life, so does everything we read become a part of our life.
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only once". I couldn't agree more. I believe that every book we read changes us a little and shapes who we are. Of course, in a story everyone finds a different benefit for his/herself and this is even more substantial. A single book that exists has influenced the life of every single person who has read it and in a different way, too. This is huge.
It is not something we often think about, but it is a significant part of a person's life. I also think that the current book we are reading helps us create views and find out solutions to our daily problems.
So, what are you reading? And now ,if you think about it, how does it shape your days?
