It is hard to brake a nation's spirit. Near impossible, maybe. People are likely to resist every attempt to be run ever by an outsider. But what is a nation in fact and how does it work? There are, of course, many and scientifically proven theories on the topic. In these lines I will try to seek for some truth myself.
Today I saw a match of the Bulgarian national volleyball team on the semifinals of the European cup. The match was played in Bulgaria. All the hall was full of happy, cheering Bulgarians, singing, shouting, playing. There was great excitement among the fans. And great disappointment in the end, when we lost for one point. But tomorrow, when is played the game for the third place, there will be as many again cheering the team.
Watching all those fans, I realized, that although the team is the common element, that holds together the experience, there is something more to it. All these people came because they felt proud to be Bulgarians and wanted to show it - to themselves, to the others in the hall, to the team. But why? What is the difference where you were born? A nation by definition is a large gruop of people, who were born iin a small distance and share common values. How this creates the feeling you belong and furthermore the need to be proud or to want some smaller group's success in a game?
I think that nation is not just a geographic term. A nation, in order to exist, needs more than soil, needs spirit. When people are close to each other by place of birth, by language, by values and by emotions, then we talk about a nation. These feelings - that you are proud, that you belong, that you have a certain place - they all come from the shared energy. No group of people can not call themselves a nation, if they don't have a similar vibe, if
they are not close not just by blood and birthplace, but by spirit.
What I saw today in the game also made me proud. When you a are a part of a nation, you can not lie about it. It is inside you and has little to do with where you were born. It is about who you are.
