On learning how to focus - ironically I was erratic when I wrote the piece.
There are no discussions in this story yet. Why don't you create one?

Also, the lens of a camera sees only what we want it to see and doesn't capture the full picture. This is a very thoughtful/thought provoking piece that could spark some interesting discussion with specific life tensions imposed, I think. Show more

By approaching this subject in this way, I think, maybe gives us a bit of a tool we can use in our mental discipline - pull focus, re-focus, adjust focus, sharpen the focus, or maybe push the subject out of focus. Not only do we choose where we point our lens (mental focus, attention, etc), and what we choose to include or exclude in that framing, but even from there we have choices within that frame to participate more fully by focusing, by adjusting our focus, or in the other extreme, simply putting the lens cap on and tuning out.
Of course you may have had a totally different idea and thought about this piece, but that is what came into focus for me as I read it. Thanks. JDD Show more
I told him that I have no problem with him using my camera to take photos with. He knew I did not readily give it to other people. But he wasn´t other people.
“Jay, take it", I said with a grin.
“Now, this is the shutter release. You need to hold that until a green rectangle appears on the object of your interest. See..”
How easy would life be if we kept reminding ourselves that we should be focused on what is important to us. Our focus would be on our education, work and healthy life until we graduate. Then we would release the shutter and would pose for that graduation photo. Our hand would automatically find its next subject, until we excel at it and move on or find out that this is not our thing and move on. It is all about the movement isn’t it? That is why we have the servo option at least, for our moving subjects.
Thrills are born when you often change your perspective. Coming from a young person in her last year of studies.. maybe this is valid for the young. Or those who

Collecting snaps. Knowing when to change the subject of your focus is essential. Being able to do that, unobstructed by debt, work or children is … an old “responsible person” would tell you – impossible. But as Frank Turner sings,
“Oh when no one’s yet explained to me exactly what's so great
About slaving 50 years away on something that you hate…”
Keep your options and your eyes open for subjects you like. It has got to work out.
