Water on Mars. The humanity has lived to a big day in our history. But what this really means?
How I see it there are two most possible outcomes.
First, the skeptic one - there is no reason to be excited and the marks on the craters are not what they seem to be. We continue till the end of the human race to try and get to live on Mars but it is just beyond our abilities. We die with the Sun, never have set foot near running water on Mars
On the other hand, given the common euphoria, looks a lot like a science fiction dream, that we have dreamed for a long time now, coming true. We send machines to the Red planet, then colonist, then we cultivate the surface and in not more than a hundred years we have concord the cosmos.
In this case I would like to be one of the first colonist. We would travel in a drug caused sleep (and maybe even cryo). When we get to the Red planet we will already have a small dome, created by the machines for us, full of oxygen, generated by plants. In time our dome would be coming bigger and bigger. Soon the Earth would become just a chimera, a receiver of our messages and reports. One day maybe some other humans would start to land on our Red planet. By this time it may have become a paradise.Or, more likely, it would still be a small dome with the first crew inside - crazy or old, or dead.
Maybe in the end we will colonize it successfully and the grandchildren of our grandchildren will need special explanations under line on why in the 21st century there were refugees and why there wasn't enough space for everyone, when you can just make a satellite and launch everyone that want to a new town in orbit. And why there were environmental problems, if all you have to do is "de-atomize" the rubbish.
These signs of water can be a salvation for human race, if we use them wisely. We maybe just have saved ourselves from us.
